Top Spots for a Spring Picnic and Play in DC

Spring is finally here — and that means it’s picnic season. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably looking for places where the kids can roam freely and you can sip your coffee in peace (or at least for five minutes). Here are some of my favorite picnic-and-play combos around DC that are perfect for an easy weekend or after-school outing.

1. Yards Park (Navy Yard)

The Yards Park is a modern waterfront park with wide open lawns, fountains, and steps leading right into the Anacostia River. Pack your picnic and spread out under the bridge or snag a table near the boardwalk. Bonus: Ice Cream Jubilee is right there, and the kids can splash in the water features once it’s warm enough!

Best for: toddlers, strollers, watching boats go by.

2. Bishop’s Garden at the National Cathedral

Tucked behind the cathedral, the Bishop’s garden feels like a secret hideaway. You’ll find shady benches, flowers in bloom, and little paths for exploring. The lawn nearby is perfect for a quiet picnic, and kids love climbing around the stone walls (supervised, of course).

Best for: calm play, a peaceful spot to recharge, and beautiful photos.

3. Montrose Park (Georgetown)

Montrose Park is right next to Dumbarton Oaks, but without the admission fee. There’s a huge open field, shaded areas, a cute playground, and even tennis courts. It’s quiet on weekday mornings and lively on weekends — great for bringing a blanket and letting the kids do their thing.

Best for: active play, scooters, and dog-watching.

4. The National Arboretum

The National Arboretum is my favorite spot for good reason. With so much space to explore (hello, Capitol Columns and azalea blooms!), you can find a picnic spot near any garden that calls your name. There are also wide roads for scootering and biking, and the Bonsai Museum is a surprise hit with older kids.

Best for: nature lovers, scooters, and photography-friendly backdrops.

5. Meridian Hill Park

Terraced fountains, wide lawns, and just enough shade — Meridian Hill Park is a great central spot for a blanket lunch. There’s no playground, but kids love climbing the steps and chasing pigeons. And on Sundays, you might catch the famous drum circle.

Best for: chill vibes, urban scenery, and people-watching.

Bonus Tip: Keep It Simple

You don’t need to prep a full charcuterie board (unless that brings you joy). A baguette, some cheese, a few snacks, and a bottle of water will do the trick. The real goal? Unstructured time together — and maybe a few photos that actually capture it.

If you’re thinking of scheduling a spring session, these spots are also beautiful for candid family photos. I’ll tag along while you picnic, play, and just enjoy the day.

Have a favorite picnic spot I should check out? Let me know — I’m always looking for new places to explore with my camera (and my kids).
