Enjoy the Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin

I know what you are thinking: it’s too damn crowded. But seriously, nothing says spring in DC quite like the cherry blossoms. Take a morning walk along the Tidal Basin before the crowds arrive, let the kids run around the Jefferson Memorial, or bring a picnic to soak in the pink and white blooms. If you’re looking for a quieter spot, head to Dumbarton Oaks or the National Arboretum for a more relaxed cherry blossom experience.

Visit the National Arboretum

The National Arboretum is the perfect hidden gem for families. Kids love the open space to explore, the Capitol Columns for climbing (or at least pretending!), and the vibrant azaleas that bloom in late spring. It’s the perfect place to let them run free while you enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Explore the Smithsonian Gardens

The Smithsonian museums are always a great idea, but in spring, the real magic happens outside. The Smithsonian Gardens—especially the Enid A. Haupt Garden and the Butterfly Habitat Garden—are perfect for curious little explorers. Let them find blooming tulips, chase butterflies, and take in the fresh spring air between museum visits.

Have a Picnic at the National Mall

Pack a blanket, and some snacks, and enjoy a classic DC experience—picnicking on the National Mall. Let the kids run around, fly a kite, or simply enjoy a relaxed afternoon near the Washington Monument. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a performance or festival happening nearby!

Ride the Carousel at the National Zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is always a hit, but springtime makes it extra special. Animals are more active, and the zoo is buzzing with energy. The Kids’ Farm, Amazonia exhibit, and the classic carousel make this a must-visit for little ones. Get your free tickets here.

Go on a Nature Walk at Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park is a fantastic place to let kids burn off energy. Take a family-friendly hike, explore the Nature Center (which has interactive exhibits and live animals), or simply let them splash in a creek. The park’s beauty in springtime is unbeatable.

Discover Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

If you’re looking for a unique outdoor adventure, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a must. Spring brings fresh blooms, and kids love hopping along the boardwalks over the water. It’s a peaceful and beautiful place to spend a morning with your little ones.

Take a Boat Ride on the Potomac

Spring is a great time to get out on the water! Hop on a paddleboat at Tidal Basin, take a ferry ride from Georgetown, or even rent kayaks for an active adventure. The kids will love seeing the city from a new perspective.

Visit a Farmers’ Market

Spring means farmers’ markets are back in full swing! Take the kids to Eastern Market, the Dupont Circle Farmers’ Market, or the Pike & Rose Farmers’ Market for fresh produce, baked goods, and live music. Let them pick out their favorite snacks while you enjoy the season’s best flavors.

Celebrate Spring at a DC Festival

From the National Cherry Blossom Festival to Earth Day celebrations and outdoor concerts, DC comes alive with spring festivals. Many of these events have kid-friendly activities, including crafts, performances, and hands-on fun. Keep an eye on local event calendars for something exciting happening every weekend!
